School History

Dearington is named for the surrounding neighborhood in which the school is located. The neighborhood was built as an annex to the city as a result of the city growing outward from the river basin and the downtown area. In 1927, the original two-room school opened and served black children in the neighborhood. The larger portion of the building, which can be identified by the tiled interior walls in the hallways, was added in the mid-sixties. In 1994, the community asked that consideration be given to Dearington becoming a "School for Innovation." The Lynchburg School Board complied and Dearington Elementary School for Innovation began operating in the fall of 1995.
