Strings
Beginning, intermediate and advanced orchestra courses emphasize development of music reading skills and interpretation as well as the attainment of proficiency in solo, ensemble, and full-orchestra performance.
Band
Linkhorne’s Band program consists of three bands: the sixth grade band, which is a beginning band for learning music basics; the seventh grade intermediate band; and the eighth grade advanced band. The bands participate in many concerts during the year. Students compete to participate in the all regional band as well as competition in a concert festival. The seventh and eighth grade bands have performed at King’s Dominion and played the Star Spangled Banner for the Lynchburg Classic.
Jazz Band
The LMS Jazz Band meets after school one day a week and is open to any student with an interest in joining this group to learn music, practice and develop techniques, and perform together.
Percussion Ensemble
The Linkhorne Percussion Ensemble meets after school one day a week for interested students to develop percussion skills and techniques while preparing musical pieces and performing.
Art Club
The Art Club is open to any interested student at Linkhorne Middle School. The club generally meets once a month on the second Thursday of the month in room 605 from 2:45 to 3:45. The sponsor for the activity is Mrs. Carwile. Students work on a variety of art projects during this designated time. There is a $3.00 supply fee for this club which covers the cost of materials used for the various projects.
Drama
The Linkhorne Theater Group explores different facets of theater. Oral interpretation is the actor’s personal rendition of the author’s written word as the actor reads to the audience. Story-telling is also incorporated into the course. These students repeat stories, legends, and fables through retelling the story to the audience. Students become familiar with acting by performing before an audience. They must also build sets, create props, understand the effects of lighting and sound, and master the art of make-up and design.
Show Choir
The Show Choir is a selected group of eighth grade students. They sing four-part harmony and love to dance! Auditions for the Show Choir take place each spring for the following school year.
National Junior Honor Society
The National Junior Honor Society is a group of eighth graders who meet certain requirement for grades, citizenship, and community service. NJHS is a community service group that has regular meetings where they decide what they can do to help others and the community. Members of the society volunteer as peer tutors in the Homework Club program after school. The selection process and initiation of new members takes place each spring for seventh graders who qualify to work with the organization as eighth graders the following year.
PETAL
PETAL is a K-12 program that identifies students with academic potential to achieve at a higher level. The program encourages students to take more demanding courses. PETAL stands for Promoting Excellence Through Accelerated Learning.
STEP with Links
STEP with Links is an after school program provided by the Pauline F. Maloney STEP With Links Program which supports the academic and cultural growth of minority students in the 6th grade and is sponsored by STEP With Links, Inc., an organization of professional women. This program is funded entirely through donations.
MATHCOUNTS
MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math coaching and competition program for middle school students.
MATHCOUNTS goals are to:
- EXCITE students about math by providing a fun and challenging experience that rewards their effort and achievement.
- TEACH young adults to be problem solvers and develop their competitive spirit.
- DEMONSTRATE how math is important to everyday life.
- BUILD essential teamwork skills.
The LMS MATHCOUNTS club meets every Monday afternoon, starting the first week in October. In December, the competitors are cut to a core group of 8 that competes at the regional MATHCOUNTS competition in February at Lynchburg College. The winning team and top 3 individual winners from the regional competition are then asked to compete at the state MATHCOUNTS competition in March at the University of Richmond.
Science Club
The Science Club meets to explore new and exciting discoveries in our universe. The topics vary. Also, the Science Club, in a partnership with the Lynchburg Parks & Recreation Department, helps to maintain one of our city’s nature trails with two trips each year.
World Language Clubs
Le Cercle Français (The French Club)
Open to eighth graders taking French and to 7th graders who plan to take French, this club provides students with an opportunity to enjoy the culture of a country known for its appreciation of the finer things in life. The students prepare and sample French food, play French games, sing French songs, and learn about France and its traditions from guest speakers as well as from videos and slides. Activities may include a trip to a restaurant or a movie or play. There are also activities coordinated with the French Club at EC Glass. The overall goal is to provide enjoyable, hands-on experience for students as they learn about France.
Spanish Club
Spanish Club is an extension of activities covered in the classroom. It is an opportunity for students to practice speaking through writing and performing skits in Spanish. Vocabulary is expanded by playing Vocabulary Bingo. An understanding of the culture of Spanish speaking countries is also expanded through music, food, and crafts. A good time is had by all.
Technology Club
Technology Student Association (TSA) is a club for students that have previously been enrolled or are currently enrolled in Tech Ed classes. The club meets during E-period.
Peer Mediation
Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution programs help address conflict within schools and teach students important life skills in conflict resolution. Learning to listen, problem-solving, and negotiation skills are all important for resolving particular disputes among students.
Students are chosen to be mediators based on their listening, leadership, and confidentiality skills. Students are recommended by their peers to become mediators. Students who are experiencing conflicts are able to request peer mediation services through the counseling department. Each mediation involves an adult, two student mediators, and the two persons in conflict.
Jaguar Ambassadors
The Jaguar Ambassadors program brings together students from grades 7 and 8 who are strong Student Leaders in their class. The Jaguar Ambassadors work together to develop programs that promote a positive and safe learning atmosphere for everyone at Linkhorne Middle School.

Friends of Rachel Club
Friends of Rachel Club is a program that provides the opportunity for LMS to partner with Rachel’s Challenge to continue the chain reaction of kindness and compassion in our school and community.
