The Lynchburg City School board voted on June 28, 2011 to appoint Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Al Coleman to serve as the Acting Superintendent, effective July 1, 2011. Mr. Coleman will serve in this capacity during the month of July, while the School Board finalizes the process of hiring an Interim Superintendent to lead the division into the 2011-2012 academic year. Pursuant to Section 2.2-3712 (B) of the Code of Virginia , during the next 15 days the Lynchburg City School Board will hold closed meetings at undisclosed locations for the purpose of interviewing candidates for the position of Interim Superintendent.
Mr. Coleman has been with the division for thirty-eight years, the past nineteen years as an administrator. Mr. Coleman has held the positions of supervisor in curriculum and instruction, director of staff development, director of school-business partnerships, and director of secondary education. He is a graduate of E. C. Glass High School and holds a B.S. in English from The College of William and Mary, and a M.Ed. from Lynchburg College.
"The School Board is very confident in Mr. Coleman’s professional capability, experience and leadership skills. We are blessed to have someone with such a long history of loyal service and knowledge of the school division to help provide an important measure of stability during this transition period," said School Board Chairman Mary Ann Barker.
In addition to finalizing the process of appointing an Interim Superintendent, the School Board is beginning the process of seeking out a consulting firm to aid in the search for Lynchburg City School’s next superintendent. The search is expected to take at least four to six months. During this time the school board will solicit the input of the community to identify the attributes most important when searching for the next school division head.
