This school year, Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) introduced the Missed Bus Pickup program. This new pilot initiative provides students who have missed their regular school bus pickup with an alternative form of transportation to school. Funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia as part of the All In VA initiative, the program is designed to remove barriers to attendance by making transportation more accessible for families across the division.
Here’s how the program works:
- If your child misses the bus, call their school’s main office to request a ride through the attendance clerk.
- Each student will be allowed two rides per quarter.
- Missed Bus Pickup is available only from 8 a.m. to noon on a first come, first served basis.
- Students will be transported to school only, not home from school.
Research shows that daily school attendance is crucial to student success. LCS thanks families for partnering with us to ensure students attend school every day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect when the Missed Bus Pickup driver picks up my child?
After your school’s attendance clerk confirms your ride, the driver will pick up your child. Please be patient as you wait for your driver to arrive, as they may need to pick up and/or drop off other students before heading your way. The driver will be in a Ford Explorer with LCS logos on it.
Am I guaranteed a ride if I request one?
No. If all ride slots are filled for the morning or if your child has already used their two allotted quarterly rides, you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation for your child.
Can I request a ride for a future date?
No. You can request a ride only on the morning your child will need transportation, and only after they miss their bus. Requests made in advance for future dates will not be honored.
Can students request their own rides?
No. Parents or guardians of students must make all requests for rides.
Can I request a ride home from school for my child?
No. Alternative transportation is only available from 8 a.m. to noon. Students will be transported to school only, not home from school.
Where can I direct questions about this program?
