Sandusky Elementary School's curriculum conforms to and, in many instances, goes beyond the Standards of Learning established by the General Assembly of Virginia and the State Board of Education.

The Lynchburg City Schools SOL enabling objectives alignment forms the core of the language arts program. The goal of the program is to give students the very best experiences in listening, speaking, reading, and writing so that they will be able to think and communicate with increasing skill and confidence. A variety of instructional methods and techniques are used to assure that all students become successful readers.

The objective of Sandusky Elementary's mathematics program is to develop, and achieve a balance between, student mastery of basic computational skills and student conceptual thinking and problem solving techniques. A spiral approach that allows for reinforcement at each stage of development with necessary assessment and evaluation is used as pupils progress through the math continuum. The curriculum is based on the Lynchburg City Schools enabling objectives alignment. Opportunities for acceleration are available at all levels.

The History and Social Sciences program at Sandusky Elementary is designed to prepare students for citizenship in the twenty-first century. The program is filled with lessons and activities that create an appreciation of our rich, multicultural society and foster pride in our nation's heritage. Students learn the key roles that government and economics play in shaping our nation and the world.

The objective of Sandusky Elementary's Science program is to enable students to examine the world in a systematic manner. Instructional experiences are designed to teach a sequence of scientific process skills, to expand the level of content knowledge, and to develop habits of personal safety and good health. Students learn to collect, classify, analyze, and record data. In addition, they learn to observe, infer and generalize scientific concepts.

At Sandusky Elementary, students regularly participate in cultural arts activities and movement education. Specialists, classroom teachers, and art volunteers expose students to movement, art, drama, and musical performances throughout the school year. Optional Suzuki violin instruction is offered weekly.

Sandusky Elementary is part of the City of Lynchburg's Wide Area Network and has One-to-One devices in first through fifth grades where every child has a device for their use while at school. Kindergarten shares a cart of devices. Every classroom has an interactive display panel to enhance learning and many have digital presenters. The use of interactive software and the Internet greatly enhances the learning experiences of Sandusky's students. 

The Media Center has an automated library catalog that students use to search for books and other media.

What is PBIS?
PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn. During the year, all students will have the opportunity to earn points for positive behaviors. The points earned are tracked through Classroom DOJO, which is website based program that parents are able to track at home as well.
