2020 Breakfast with the Superintendent

The Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation held its annual fundraising event, ‘Breakfast with the Superintendent’ on March 10, 2020 at the University of Lynchburg. This event drew a capacity crowd of 450 business and community leaders as the Superintendent of Lynchburg City Schools, Dr. Crystal M. Edwards, introduced this year’s program, entitled ‘I am Lynchburg.’ Karen Nelson, Perrymont Elementary School Principal and 32 year LCS veteran, served as master of ceremonies, poignantly showcasing some of LCS’s lesser known programs that ensure exceptional educational opportunities for all Lynchburg City School students. Guest speakers movingly described how LCS implements Community Learning Grants to engage student and family learning outside of traditional school hours and how Project Search is a vocational training program for young adult students with disabilities, has resulted in a 100 percent success rate placing these students at jobs that pay a living wage. The audience also heard from Heritage High School junior, Kevana Woodcox, who shared how her LCS nurse aide career tech class through the LCS career tech program, a $13,000 scholarship from the Al Stroobants Foundation, and internship opportunity are moving her forward to pursue her education to achieve a doctorate in the healthcare field.

The Education Foundation sponsors programs and activities designed to provide additional resources for teachers, recognize student accomplishments, and strengthen our schools. Proceeds from the breakfast are used to fund ongoing programs and projects such as Classroom Innovation Grants, the Tools4Schools Warehouse, an annual Senior Honors Reception, and student scholarships.
