Lynchburg City Schools is honored that Dr. Charles W. Pryor, Jr. and his family have chosen to give a total of $100,000 in college scholarships to four outstanding high school seniors from E. C. Glass or Heritage high schools over the next four years.
The "Award for Excellence in Science" will provide a four-year, $25,000 scholarship to be awarded every school year for the next four years to an outstanding senior interested in entering a science-related field of study. The award will be distributed to an institution of higher learning over a four-year time period with an installment of $3,125 each semester.
"Lynchburg City Schools is honored that Dr. Pryor and his family would choose to invest in the future of our students," said Assistant Superintendent Al Coleman. "This scholarship will indeed help students on the path to pursuing successful careers in science-related fields. It is especially humbling that a family that has already given so much to our community both acknowledges and contributes to the quality of public education in Lynchburg."
The award will be given to the top senior science student as determined by a selection process that includes a written application, a letter of interest, three letters of recommendation, an official transcript and an interview with the division-level selection committee.
Dr. Pryor is a graduate of both E. C. Glass High School and Virginia Tech. He spent 25 years with the Babcock and Wilcox Company, serving as President of the Nuclear and Power Division. While in Lynchburg, Dr. Pryor served as a member of the Lynchburg City School Board and past chairman of the Lynchburg City Schools’ Partners in Education program.
"LCS students are among the best and brightest in Virginia, and Dr. Pryor’s generous gift provides our outstanding students with an unprecedented opportunity to pursue their science-related fields," said Superintendent Scott Brabrand. "Partnerships such as this help Lynchburg City Schools achieve our mission of ‘Every Child, By Name and By Need, to Graduation.’"
Dr. Pryor and his family were recognized during the November 19th school board meeting for their generous donation.
