Several Lynchburg City Schools celebrated Read Across America Day on March 2 with activities that promoted reading. Read Across America is an annual program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss.

At Bedford Hills, principal Robert Quel did his best impression of the Cat in the Hat with an original oratory written in the Seuss rhyme and rhythm scheme. Librarian, Barbara Mehler, hosted the classes that were the read-a-thon winners in the library. Students brought a beach towel, sleeping bag, stuffed animal, and a snack and had 45 minutes of reading in the library.

At Linkhorne Middle School, students participated in “Read the Most from Coast to Coast.” The event challenged students to shatter the national one-day record for Accelerated Reader quiz-taking, and that’s just what they did, by more than one million quizzes. The national record now sits at 3,581,992. Educators were able to see the progress toward the national goal online.

Sheffield had Book Buddies where older students read to younger students.
- Students at Paul Munro Elementary wore their pajamas to school and had DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read) for 20 minutes.
